The Mute
Warning: Contains talk of abuse
He’d not seen anything like it, and it was the first time he’d ever seen her face at all. He noticed the thin white scar stretching across her left cheek.
She stretched out her hand expectantly, the sudden gesture scaring him into motion. With ramping anxiety, he fumbled with the strings holding the mask to his face. It eventually came loose and dropped to the earth. He scrambled to get it, but The Mute beat him to it, gently lifting it off the ground.
“Thank you,” Her minions said in unison, a sea of rotting flesh and plant matter surrounding them on all sides.
Tora closed his eyes and waited. Surely this was it. Hopefully, it would be swift.
But nothing happened.
Tora opened his eyes to see The Mute quietly dusting off her mask. The sea of minions had dispersed, leaving only a few, including a particularly small rodent like one on her shoulder.
“Aren’t you… going to, um…”
The Mute looked at him.
“K-Kill me?” He swallowed.
“No.”
Her answer was immediate and without hesitation.
“What?”
“Why would I?”
“B-Because I’m a thief?”
The Mute gave him a considered look before responding.
“Tell me Tora Zollun, how does one deal with Nightmare Court?”
“U-Um…”
“Eradicate them, and…” The Mute pointed directly at him. “Free the prisoners.”
This caught him off guard, and he scoffed, “I -what? I’m not a prisoner!”
She kept pointing.
“I-I’m not! I-why would you?” He wasn’t sure why he was arguing this. If this is what was keeping her from killing him, he should just play along until he was safely away from her. That’s what he should do, but it bothered him. It bothered him a lot, and he could feel heat rushing to his cheeks.
“I chose to be with the Daggers, Mute!” He protested.
